The story of a Golden Globe nominated actress who’s done much of it and advice to those who want to do it!

I love to act….I always have since I was a small child, sometimes daring to go where few people would…I had the gall to do Cleopatra’s death scene at the age of 15 as one of my auditions speeches for RADA…youthful hutzpah. My dilemma now is that I have three strikes against me for being offered work

1. Old

Such are the challenges of our business.   However times are changing and I see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. The lines are getting blurred between the ages, older woman are getting a better rep….Judi Dench, (who has just bared her all for a good cause) Maggie Smith, ( she never ages…in Downton Abbey, she appears to be the same age as when the series began….she would be well in her hundreds in the current time period 1920’s, hasn’t anyone noticed?!) the glorious Meryl Streep….the list goes on.  We are no longer being reduced to being someone’s mother, the old helpful neighbor, the demented old woman confined to a nursing home/ wheelchair etc etc…whatever handy cliche comes to mind…. women with apparently no life behind them, no story…boring, take note you would be writers.lawrence_of_arabia_3_otoole

Everyone has a story, give us a hint.

I understand that up until his last illness Peter O’Toole would grab any part he was offered in any dross that was out there.   Peter was a consummate actor and remained so until the end…actors need/want to act. Thankfully his legacy will always be LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, BECKET, THE LION IN WINTER, MY FAVORITE YEAR, JEFFREY BARNARD IS UNWELL and so on.

So now I am creating my own stuff, so I can act and having met and am gathering a talented group of people around me, will get on with it…3 proper projects on the table and happy with the anticipation of doing it!  I am an actor with skill, not a celebrity and I want to act.

Sounds great Jane. I’m glad my daughter Emily enjoys the acting and dancing side of life as well as her soccer. She is involved with a nice drama group called Kinver Light Operatic Society she has just done the show hairspray with them and is taking a gap year when she finishes A level exams next month. Hope all is well.
